What is the Estancia Basin?

The Estancia Basin is closed topographic basin located in central New Mexico. It occupies about 2,000 square miles and lies within Torrance, Santa Fe, and Bernalillo counties. No surface water flows in or out of the Estancia Basin and precipitation either recharges the groundwater or evapotranspirates.

What are the common issues affecting groundwater in the Estancia Basin?

The Estancia Basin Water Planning Committee's network of groundwater monitoring wells show that water levels in the alluvium and the center of the basin are declining at rates of greater than 2 ft/yr, but the edges of the basin exhibit flat or variable changes due to mountain-front recharge.

What are the regulations and permits required for drilling a new well in the Estancia Basin?
